On open caucus question, ‘efficiency’ argument falls short

Editor’s note: Longtime AP reporter Bob Anez sent me an email responding to my Sunday column, and when someone with Bob’s experience has something to say, you listen. I liked what he said so much—while realizing how ill-thought-out my own position had been—that I asked if I could print his email. He said yes:

I have met few journalists I respect more than you, but I disagree with a few comments in your column regarding the secret GOP caucus last week. (more…) Continue Reading →

Fracking-ban expert to speak Saturday in Billings

Slottje

Six years ago, Helen Slottje was a corporate attorney working for a big law firm in Boston. Moving to Upstate New York in 2009 turned her into an environmental activist, and this summer she was awarded a prestigious environmental prize for her work in helping communities in New York ban fracking. Fort Peck Tribes welcome wild bison home

Bison

Ninety-seven wild Yellowstone bison were delivered to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation Thursday, with 42 more scheduled to arrive Friday. Robert Magnan, director of Fort Peck Fish and Game and head of the reservation’s buffalo program, said the bison were greeted by prayers and songs “welcoming them back to their homeland.” (more…) Continue Reading →

From the Outpost: Nothing funny about war crimes

In his Sunday column in the Billings Gazette, editor Darrell Ehrlick dropped this nugget, just two days before the election: Prior to September’s debate in Billings between U.S. House candidates Ryan Zinke and John Lewis, Zinke said, “John plays the guitar. I waterboard.” (more…) Continue Reading →

From the Outpost: With Curtis, at least a sliver of hope

Regular readers of this irregularly filled space know that I am no fan of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Daines. I have written columns:

* Criticizing his foolish and un-American bill that would tie congressional pay to balancing the budget. Why un-American? Because the bill would allow millionaires like Daines to hold hostage for partisan ends the paychecks of middle-class representatives like his Democratic opponent, Amanda Curtis. It’s a dumb idea, and the fact that a Democrat, John Lewis, argues that members of Congress shouldn’t get paid unless they pass a budget doesn’t make it any smarter. Continue Reading →

Circus, sound bites, cliches: A night at the great debate

Debate

Amanda Curtis does not think the United States can be “the policeman of the world.” Nor does she believe that Congress should “kick the can down the road.”

Steve Daines said his policies are good “not only for this generation but our children and our grandchildren.” He also said “we need to have both sides coming to the table and coming to an agreement.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Terry Badlands beckon on a perfect fall day

Chimney

TERRY — We went to the Terry Badlands on Saturday knowing that the natural bridges—huge spans of sandstone over a dry gulch—were prime attractions of the area. What we didn’t know was that one of the first things you encounter as you approach the badlands from the frontage road west of Terry is a bridge of an entirely different kind: the old Milwaukee Road railroad bridge across the Yellowstone River. (more…) Continue Reading →

Citizens appeal for transparency on gas flaring, oil spills

Oil board

Two members of the Northern Plains Resource Council appealed to the Montana Board of Oil and Gas Conservation on Wednesday to make information on oil spills and gas flaring more readily accessible to the public. “We thought perhaps you could take a look at what North Dakota does,” Deborah Hanson told the board during one of its regular meetings in Billings. From the Outpost: An opening for long-shot Lewis

I just about dropped what’s left of my teeth when I saw on Sunday that the Billings Gazette had endorsed John Lewis for the U.S. House over Ryan Zinke. Zinke seemed to be the natural pick in this race: tons of experience, some of it relevant; an unflappable public presence; a history of edging toward moderation. Even the Butte Weekly, a Democratic-leaning newspaper in a Democratic-leaning town, has endorsed Zinke, a Republican. (more…) Continue Reading →
