The Bar Tab: Unlooked-for jollity at the Southern Empire

Emporium

What made us choose to visit the Southern Empire Emporium? Sheer curiosity, really. It is positioned on the south side of exit 446 at 1212 Mullowney Lane, and we had gone past the place too many times not to check it out. We weren’t expecting much, but it turned out to be a memorable decision. (more…) Continue Reading →

Map shows best Christmas light displays in Billings

When I was a boy, back in the pioneer days, our family would drive around looking at Christmas lights with absolutely no help from anyone else. Nobody printed maps of good displays in those days, and when we attempted to consult the Internet, it was only to be reminded that it hadn’t been invented yet. People today have it so easy! Just look at this “Christmas Light Spectacular” map, created for Bridge Creek Dental and offered up to you, the reading public, at no charge. It’s not terribly easy to read, I know, but you can go to the Bridge Creek Dental website and download the map to take with you on your excursion. Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: At Bones, a fine mixologist earns plaudits

Bones

What sort of person leaves a kegger? Well, apparently we do. As much as we love our friends, it’s time to admit that keg parties stop being fun when one of the following happens:

♦ You enter a monogamous relationship and are no longer into drunken hook-ups. ♦ Latent knee injuries make keg stands problematic. ♦ You learn the hard way that you can’t drink your dinner. Continue Reading →

A good friend gone, a magical canyon close to home

Overhang

For years, I’ve wanted to write about Cottonwood Canyon, a strangely beautiful high-desert hideaway about 15 miles south of Bridger. I never did, though, because I had considered it as somehow belonging to my good friend, Tim Arneson, who first showed it to me more than 30 years ago. I suppose Cottonwood Canyon is his forever now. His children scattered his ashes there in October. (more…) Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: A lucky night to stumble into Stadium Club

Stadium

We want to start by saying we are not Heights dwellers. It’s not that we have anything particularly against the Heights or its residents; we just live on the West End and don’t often make the long trek down Highway 3. Because of this, we generally do not find ourselves in the Heights after work. However, on one (truly) fateful night we needed to be in the Heights, had some time to kill, and decided to stop for a drink. (more…) Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: Buck’s, a dive with the right ingredients

Buck's

At the beginning of this mission, we knew one of the first stops had to be Buck’s Bar. We’d driven by this joint, located at 1511 Central Ave., for over five years and we frequently commented on it, but we’d never stopped in. So, on a recent evening we found ourselves in a wood-paneled room, lined with gaming machines and smelling faintly of urinal cakes. (more…) Continue Reading →

One kosher food delivery, then 15 minutes of fame

El Al

Kat Healy didn’t think her act of kindness of behalf of a group of stranded travelers last weekend was that big a deal. “Honestly, my mom and I did not think it was a story,” she said. A lot of other people apparently did. The tale of their efforts to provide kosher food for passengers on an El Al Airlines flight out of Israel that made an unplanned stop at Billings Logan International Airport on Sunday was reported by the Billings Gazette and then picked up by newspapers and websites around the world. (more…) Continue Reading →
