Ed Kemmick

Ed Kemmick has been a newspaper reporter, editor and columnist since 1980. Except for four years in his home state of Minnesota, he has spent his entire journalism career in Montana, working in Missoula, Anaconda, Butte and Billings. "The Big Sky, By and By," a collection of some of his newspaper stories and columns, plus a few essays and one short story, was published in 2011.

Office of Disciplinary Counsel files complaint against Wittich

The state Office of Disciplinary Counsel filed a complaint against former state Sen. Art Wittich on Monday, charging him with professional misconduct. The complaint, filed with the Commission on Practice of the Montana Supreme Court by Chief Disciplinary Counsel Michael Cotter, stems from Wittich’s trial in 2016, when he was found liable for violations of state campaign finance laws. Members look to future as Good Earth co-op dissolves

At a special meeting Thursday at the cooperative grocery store and deli in downtown Billings, members present voted 89 to 10 to dissolve the co-op, which had debts of more than $500,000 at mid-month, and assets of about about $150,000. New repertory theater group schedules first 3 plays

A new professional theater company in Billings will kick off its debut season next month, presenting three award-winning plays through next June. The Yellowstone Repertory Theatre, whose beginnings were charted by Last Best News in February, will open its first season with a production of “Doubt, A Parable,” by John Patrick Shanely, running Nov. 3-18. That will be followed by Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie,” March 2-17 2018, and Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the Heart,” next June 8-23. (more…) Continue Reading →

Park board seeks tax boost for backlog of improvements

Rick DeVore and Tom Rupsis have been making the rounds of civic and business groups in recent weeks, pitching a proposal from the Billings Park, Recreation and Cemetery Board to levy new taxes to maintain and expand city parks. They are scheduled to address their most important audience on Nov. 6, when they make the case for the tax increase at a work session of the Billings City Council, hoping the council will vote in favor of the tax increase before new council members are seated in January.
