Ed Kemmick

Ed Kemmick has been a newspaper reporter, editor and columnist since 1980. Except for four years in his home state of Minnesota, he has spent his entire journalism career in Montana, working in Missoula, Anaconda, Butte and Billings. "The Big Sky, By and By," a collection of some of his newspaper stories and columns, plus a few essays and one short story, was published in 2011.

Another good newspaperman gone

I wrote recently about stopping by the Daniels County Leader to introduce myself to the publisher, Burley Bowler, and meeting other employees of that great weekly newspaper. Now comes word that Burley’s brother, Printer Bowler, also a newspaperman, died Monday in Missoula. I met Printer at least once, when he attended a gathering of the Butte Press Club in the company of the late Nathaniel Blumberg, a legendary dean of the UM School of Journalism. The Montana Kaimin, UM’s student newspaper, has a good story on Printer’s life and legacy. Here’s one excerpt:

Not quite ready for the Olympics

I don’t know how widely this video has circulated, but I only just saw it, and it is crazy. It shows people “competing” in the Big Sky Pond Skim and it features some of the most spectacular crashes I’ve ever seen. There are at least half a dozen crashes that would have ended all my pond skimming, and probably every other activity, for the rest of my life. Ouch! Continue Reading →

Missoulian photographer goes adventuring

Here’s a great idea from a great photographer: Kurt Wilson, who works for the Missoulian, is planning six one-week tours throughout Montana. His goal is to visit all of the 250-some historical markers in Montana and to photograph whatever catches his fancy along the way. The first batch of more than 100 photos went up last week, from his driving tour of southwest Montana.
