Lake Elmo beavers: Cute, yes, but something of a nuisance

Ice beaver

Three or four beavers—one or two adults and two kits—have built themselves a home on the shores of Lake Elmo in the Heights. Their bank den is on the west side of the 64-acre reservoir, near the boat launch and right alongside a culvert that feeds the lake with water from the Billings Bench Water Association canal. A bank den is similar to a lodge but incorporates the bank surface into the structure. (more…) Continue Reading →

Butte columnist hails hometown hero

Ever since it was revealed that a certain fellow from Butte fired the shots that killed You Know Who over in You Know Where, there has been a flood of news stories, interviews and commentary about that particular SEAL. Now, I think, we have the definitive word on the subject, written by Bill Foley, a columnist at ButteSports.com. Foley has known You Know Who for most of his life, and has this reflection about their time together in junior high school:

“Like me, he probably wasn’t the coolest guy in the school back then. That is pretty much where our similarity ends. While I was too scared to go to boot camp for the National Guard, You Know Who swam up, in the middle of the night, on a Russian sub in the Persian Gulf. Continue Reading →

Mercury News profiles Sid Thomas

Clair Johnson wrote a fine profile of Judge Sidney Thomas last month, a week before he came chief judge of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Today, the San Jose Mercury News ran a profile of Thomas, coming to pretty much the same conclusions as the Montanans who know him well—that Thomas will be a relatively low profile but effective leader for the court. In the words of one of his former law clerks: “There’s no drama. He’s not an ideologically driven person. He really cares about the record; we were deciding cases, not making policy.” Continue Reading →

Young computer science student shoots for the stars

Box

Kobi Hudson is still a little embarrassed about how he acquired an intense interest in computer science. “I was just really against the idea of taking a foreign language in high school,” he said. So when he heard that some colleges gave foreign-language credits for computer science classes, “I said, ‘Heck yeah!’” (more…) Continue Reading →

Let your mind, and the hogs, run wild

Meagher

Having looked at all 1,482 bills that have been proposed for the 2015 Montana Legislature, as of Saturday, I’m pretty sure my two favorite pieces of legislation are the work of one man, Sen. Jim Keane, D-Butte. One would “provide for the feral hog prevention act” and the other would “assess a fee for PowerPoint presentation.” (more…) Continue Reading →

New Mustangs owners say they’re in for the long haul

Stangs

The new owners of the Billings Mustangs said Friday that they intend to be in Billings for what one of them said would be a “very, very long time.”

Dave Heller and Bob Herrfeldt, partners in Main Street Baseball, based in Davenport, Iowa, were introduced at a press conference Friday afternoon at Dehler Park, the 6-year-old ballpark that is home to the Mustangs. (more…) Continue Reading →

For Parkinson’s patient, yoga puts her back in control

Kay

The first time Kay Zepeda walked into Perfect Balance Yoga & Massage, it was with great difficulty. She remembers it as a life-changing date: Oct. 21, 2011. She was 54 and had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a few months earlier, though she’d known for a long time that something was seriously wrong with her. (more…) Continue Reading →

Owners of the Billings Mustangs have called a press conference for Friday, and though they’re not saying what is to be announced, it appears likely that the team is being sold to Main Street Baseball. The press conference, set for 3 p.m. in the clubhouse at Dehler Park, home of the Mustangs, will include Woody Hahn, president of the club, and Dave Heller, president of Main Street Baseball. Lawmaker, now publisher, helping to find his successor

McNiven

Many of the candidates hoping to occupy the state House seat vacated by Rep. Jonathan McNiven will be featured in the issue of the Yellowstone County News that will hit the shelves Thursday. It was his recent purchase of that weekly newspaper that prompted McNiven to resign from the Legislature just two weeks after he was re-elected to the House by a wide margin.
