The Fort Peck Tribal Council has passed a resolution in support of a bitterly contested North Carolina law governing use of public restrooms by transgendered people. The council passed the resolution on Monday by a 9-1 vote. The dissenting vote was cast by Tony Shields, who said in an email that he probably would reluctantly sign off on the final resolution. He said he considered the resolution a moot point because the Fort Peck Tribes have no authority over schools. (more…) Continue Reading →

Former President Bill Clinton showed some of his old political touch in Billings on Friday, but he told a crowd at Middle James Middle School that this year’s presidential campaign is not about the past. “I’m not trying to take you back in time,” he said. “I’m getting you to look forward.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Surgeon offers inside look at shoulder operation

In an age of omnipresent technology, Americans are getting used to the idea that everything around them is going to be recorded on video. Now a Billings doctor is expanding that to include what’s inside them. Thomas Owen at the Yellowstone Surgery Center says he is the first surgeon in the region to begin distributing internal videos and photos, accompanied by narrative, to patients undergoing surgery done with the aid of a scope, such as joint and rotator cuff injuries. While I have never been as obsessed with Cyphers as Ed Kemmick is, I wrote a series of columns for the Billings Outpost about his legal and financial irregularities after he took over the weekly Lockwood Crier and converted it to the Montana News Association. For a while, I was Cyphers’ Enemy No. 1. Those columns are no longer available on the web (you can find a few quotes here)  but I recall that when I first heard about the change in ownership of the Crier, I called and was connected to a man who identified himself as “Mark Johnson.” Continue Reading →
