Readers, have you ever had a really good slushy? One that’s not too syrupy, with a smooth texture and no discernible ice chunks? Did it have alcohol in it? If not, shame on you. Our first visit to Manny’s happened last summer. Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: CJ’s—not bad for a bar with identity crisis
|
If you’re just driving by, it’s hard to get a feel for CJ’s Bar and Grill. Located at 2455 Central Ave., CJ’s is nestled in a small strip mall next to a printer cartridge refill outfit. It’s also on the way to Target, so we pass by often. The exterior design of CJ’s is somewhat modern, with an almost cubist vibe. It looks like either a relic of the ’80s geometric period or a new architect’s attempt at “chic.” We weren’t sure what we were getting ourselves into when we chose this venue, but we thought it was worth a try. The Bar Tab: A decent enough place, with one warning

The Den could be described as conveniently located but easily overlooked. Recognizable but forgettable. It is tucked behind Lucky’s Market and has a street address of 1595 Grand Ave., but is actually located more than half a block north of Grand, just past the roundabout in the West Park Plaza. You would have to be looking pretty hard to see it while driving past on Grand. (more…) Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: Entertaining episode enlivens tavern visit

Where is Fiddler’s Green? After hearing relentless media promotions singing this tavern’s praises, we assumed it would be easy to find. We were wrong. Even with GPS, we spent some minutes circling the area where the bar was supposed to be, then finally arrived at Fiddler’s Green, located at 5104 Southgate Drive, hidden within a maze of hotels, warehouses and industrial buildings. The Bar Tab: Familiar-feeling pleasures at the Tap Inn

What do you do when you find yourself without tequila on Cinco de Mayo? Go to the liquor store of course—but wait, it’s Sunday. This was the predicament we found ourselves in one fateful afternoon in May 2013. We set out on a mission to find a bottle, and a small bar a few blocks away came to the rescue. The Tap Inn intrigued us with its dim lighting and cinderblock walls, but alas we had margaritas to make and to consume and we didn’t stick around. Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: Unlooked-for jollity at the Southern Empire
|
What made us choose to visit the Southern Empire Emporium? Sheer curiosity, really. It is positioned on the south side of exit 446 at 1212 Mullowney Lane, and we had gone past the place too many times not to check it out. We weren’t expecting much, but it turned out to be a memorable decision. (more…) Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: At Bones, a fine mixologist earns plaudits

What sort of person leaves a kegger? Well, apparently we do. As much as we love our friends, it’s time to admit that keg parties stop being fun when one of the following happens:
♦ You enter a monogamous relationship and are no longer into drunken hook-ups. ♦ Latent knee injuries make keg stands problematic. ♦ You learn the hard way that you can’t drink your dinner. Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: A lucky night to stumble into Stadium Club

We want to start by saying we are not Heights dwellers. It’s not that we have anything particularly against the Heights or its residents; we just live on the West End and don’t often make the long trek down Highway 3. Because of this, we generally do not find ourselves in the Heights after work. However, on one (truly) fateful night we needed to be in the Heights, had some time to kill, and decided to stop for a drink. (more…) Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: Buck’s, a dive with the right ingredients
|
At the beginning of this mission, we knew one of the first stops had to be Buck’s Bar. We’d driven by this joint, located at 1511 Central Ave., for over five years and we frequently commented on it, but we’d never stopped in. So, on a recent evening we found ourselves in a wood-paneled room, lined with gaming machines and smelling faintly of urinal cakes. (more…) Continue Reading →
