Participants in last year’s Camp POSTCARD got to tackle a climbing wall, among many other activities.
Four long-time local supporters of a summer camp where young people are mentored by law enforcement and criminal justice professionals recently joined forces to give the camp a big gift.
Camp POSTCARD (Peace Officers Striving to Create and Reinforce Dreams), which is put on by Volunteers of America Northern Rockies, provides a value-based program for fifth- and sixth-grade youth who are mentored by and get directly involved with peace officers.
At a recent statewide gathering in Billings of the peace officer who serve as counselors at the camp, those local donors presented them with a check for $25,000. The donors were Sibanye-Stillwater Mining Co., Underriner Motors & Honda, Coal Black Cattle Co. and First Interstate Bank.
All four organizations have been supporting the camp for the past several years, and their joint donation will make sure that 84 kids from across Montana (a record number) can experience Camp POSTCARD this summer.
The free week-long camp is designed to benefit the most deserving kids from around the state. The successful program has proven to be an important opportunity to build strong relationships and valuable life skills that serve them, their families and their communities.
During the week, a variety of planned activities help youth build self-esteem and leadership and decision-making skills. This includes a number of specialized team-building activities and events, plus outdoor activities such as rock climbing, police demonstrations, archery, concerts, crafts and riflery. They also hear from guest speakers.
