Inspired by Tom Hanks, downtown Billings on Twitter

Simply basking in our spring thaw. #DowntownBillings #take31 #mtwx

You could say that @tomhanks inspired this Twitter project. Last Best News publisher/editor Ed Kemmick then made me write about it.

Fifty-some tweets and a few months ago, I found a few minutes each week — before work, after work, after the Y, on a lunchtime break, on weekends — to capture downtown scenes with my little iPhone SE. I’d add a thought, a #downtownbillings hashtag, and post it.

It’s been interesting to see what connects with readers, what triggers traffic and comments.

Sentiments on our record-setting, never-ending winter are reflected in many tweets. Others show a side of downtown that escapes the gaze of most folks. I see things a bit differently now that I’m on the hunt for the next snapshot.

No Ansel Adams here. No Pulitzer Prize candidates, either. But I get a kick out of many of these. Maybe you had to be there.

Oh, the @tomhanks thing? I follow him on Twitter. He posts quirky street-scene tweets from time to time on his account, where he describes himself this way: “I’m that actor in some of the movies you liked and some you didn’t. Sometimes I’m in pretty good shape, other times I’m not. Hey, you gotta live, you know?”

Downtown in Montana’s largest city is certainly full of life. Keep an eye out for it.
