I was going to knock and ask about these signs, but I thought better of it. Billings, South Side.
I loved this remnant of an old sign. Downtown Billings.
The sign is no great shakes, but that's a really superlative sign holder, I think. South of Roundup.
We waited and waited ... but no moose. Maybe next time. Near Lolo Hot Springs.

I don't condone the painting of rimrocks, but this old ad near Park City always catches my eye. I don't think it's the Kirkland of Costco fame.
Some signs are short and sweet, some are written by lawyers. Billings, South Side.
A bright orange sign off the highway in Wyoming—you just know it's the best Chinese food. Deaver, Wyo.

I think the idea for this series of photos was born more than a year ago, when I laid eyes on the sign that leads off the gallery.
I was walking my dog down by the sugar plant on State Avenue when I saw the old gray shed and the barely legible sign warning about the possible withholding of services. It was so odd that I went back later with my camera.
Rather than post that photo as a stand-alone, I thought I’d keep my eye out for signs as I was driving around Billings and other parts of Montana. I have a thing for oddities, for the out of place, the unintelligible and the accidentally humorous.
And I have a feeling there are a few good signs yet so be seen on my travels, so this probably won’t be the last gallery of its kind.
