The Montana History Foundation announced the awarding of grants totaling $117,000 on Wednesday.
“Our grant recipients are new and unique every year,” MHF President and CEO Charlene Porsild said in a press release. “We are so proud to support projects from Libby to Ekalaka and all points in between this year ranging from interpretive signage of outdoor exhibits to curation of dinosaur fossils to restoration work on a log cabin or an historic hotel.”
One “standout” recipient, the release continued, is the Crow Language Consortium Dictionary Project in Hardin, whose goal is design, review and publish the first professionally produced Crow dictionary.
The Crow language is classified as “definitely endangered,” the foundation said, with a 60 percent decline in school-age speakers of Crow between 1969 and 2002. That project was awarded $5,000 by the Helena-based foundation.
Other $5,000 recipients include the historic Adams Hotel in Lavina and the Carter County Museum in Ekalaka, whose annual “Dino Shindig” was named the Event of the Year during last week’s Governor’s Conference on Tourism and Recreation.
“It is our mission to support projects large and small,” Porsild said. “And this year’s winners really reflect the quality of preservation work being accomplished across the state.”The Montana History Foundation, established in 1985, is an independent, not-for-profit corporation that works to preserve the legacy of Montana’s past.
