Tomorrow is the last day to make your nominations for the 2016 Magic City Music Awards.
You can click on the MCMA ad on top of this page (it rotates with a Tumbleweed ad) or just go here to make your nominations. There are 60 categories to choose from, and you can also suggest a new category you’d like to see in the future.
Voting will then be conducted on the same site, Oct. 6 through Oct. 19. Winners will be announced during the Magic City Music Awards on Sunday, Nov. 6. That party, always a good one with a full evening of live music, will start at 4 p.m. at Yellowstone Valley Brewing’s Garage Pub, 2123 First Ave. N.
The annual event was originally known as the Tuney Awards and was conceived by Scott Prinzing, the longtime music and culture writer for the Billings Outpost, way back in 2001. I’ll never forget those early awards shows, which were co-emceed by Prinzing and Outpost founder David Crisp.
They would both be decked out in tuxedos, and they had such long gray beards that it was never definitively ascertained whether either of them ever actually wore a bow tie.
Because Crisp folded the Outpost early last year and threw in his lot with Last Best News, this online newspaper is now the official sponsor of the Magic City Music Awards. Fortunately, that sponsorship puts us on the hook for zero dollars, which is exactly how much we have to spare.
Anyway, please do make your nominations, cast your votes at the proper time and then mark your calendar for the Nov. 6 awards night. It’s a lot like a combination of the Oscar and Grammy nights, only more low-key and with shorter speeches.
