Kate Morris’ grain bin house looks out over a couple of man-made ponds near Vaughn, north of Great Falls.
In the 32-month history of Last Best News, few stories were as fun to report as the one about Kate Morris’ grain bin house, which the former Lockwood school teacher built on some family property north of Great Falls.
Readers may recall that she brought in Nick Pancheau, an architect with Collaborative Design Architects, to design her new house. Pancheau had been an art student under Morris every year from kindergarten through sixth grade in Lockwood, and she just knew he was the person for the job.
Apparently she was right. The Montana AIA, the state chapter of the American Institute of Architects, has given its top award, the Honor Award, to Collaborative Design’s grain bin house. Pancheau and other representatives of the firm will accept the award on Thursday in Butte, as part of the Montana AIA’s annual conference.
Here’s a bit more from a Montana AIA press release: “Collaborative Design Architects is a previous award winner for their work on the Park II Parking Garage in downtown Billings. Collaborative Design Architects specializes in Eastern Montana Modern Architecture, with projects ranging from custom residential, to commercial, and civic typologies.”
