Instant Reaction: Montana State 26 – Western Illinois 23
Montana State opened up their 2018 campaign with a very entertaining 26-23 win over Western Illinois. Here is an instant reaction to this game:
- Montana State’s offense was dreadful in the first half. Montana State punted 6 times Thursday night and 5 of those punts were in their first 6 possessions. Snap, Troy looks, Troy runs… didn’t work really well.
- Montana State’s defense kept them in this game in the first half. Two timely interceptions led to a half ending Field Goal that got Montana State within a touchdown at half time.
- The first MSU drive of the 2nd Half was so fun to watch. Troy Andersen came out and looked poised, confident, and in a rhythm. That is the offense the Cats need if they’re going to keep winning.
- It was amazing seeing the Cats get to the opposing quarterback. I felt like MSU got no pressure on the QB last year and to see the Cats get 4 sacks on opening night is hopefully a sign of things to come.
- Montana State has a kicker in Tristan Bailey. 4 for 4 on the night including a 50 yarder – the Cats need a kicker if they’re going to win the close games this season.
- Kevin Kassis is an exciting player and has become a great returner.
- Finally, Troy Andersen is a gamer. 145 yards on the ground is what you’ve come to expect from Andersen but his grit and determination coming out of the locker room in the 2nd half was impressive. 12 completions for 81 yards isn’t what you love to see from your QB but when he can run the ball so Tebow-esque and get you the W, that’s all you can ask for right now.
