The Iran Deal: How Montana’s Delegation is Voting
This week, both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives are scheduled to vote on a resolution of disapproval on President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran. Given the high profile nature of the vote, the Montana Mint was curious where Montana’s Congressional delegation stands on the issue.
If you want to know more about what about the deal, the Economist has a nice summary which you can find here. We’ve also included at the bottom of this post a brief video from Vox Media that summarizes the deal.
Now, how are Montana’s elected representatives voting?
Senator Jon Tester (Democrat): Supports Deal
Statement: “After reading the agreement, consulting with experts and listening to Montanans, it’s clear this deal is the only option right now to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. This agreement isn’t built on trust — it’s about holding Iran accountable through intrusive inspections and aggressive monitoring. If Iran violates this agreement, all options are on the table to ensure the security of America, Israel and our allies.” Jon Tester, August 14, 2015.
Senator Steve Daines (Republican): Against Deal
Statement: “I remain unconvinced that this agreement will prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon. This agreement paves the way for Iran to further direct its resources in leading the way as the world’s greatest state-sponsor of terrorism.” Steve Daines, July 14, 2015
Congressman Ryan Zinke (Republican): Against Deal
Statement: “I agree with Israel: This is a bad mistake of historic proportions. Iran has not proven to be a reliable and trustworthy negotiating partner. Their behavior is not of a responsible nation, as they continue to fund Hezbollah, a terrorist group, in their war against Israel. The verification parameters of this ‘deal’ are not robust enough to ensure Iran plays by the rules.” Ryan Zinke, July 14, 2015
